Established in June 2014, European Reference Networks are a feature of the EU Directive on Cross-border healthcare. They aim to unite the best specialists from across Europe to tackle complex or rare medical conditions that require highly specialised healthcare and a concentration of knowledge and resources.

On 16th, 17th and 18th October, the UEMS Council met in Granada, Spain. Representatives from National Medical Associations and Specialist Sections and European Boards discussed issues of interest to the medical profession. The meeting was very busy and fruitful and several key documents were adopted in the framework of this meeting.

DG SANCO is organising a conference on European Reference Networks on 23rd of June in Brussels which will bring together highly specialised healthcare providers, experts, national authorities, decision–makers, and independent bodies with experience in the assessment and evaluation of healthcare providers.
The UEMS-EACCME® organised its second Conference on Continuing Medical Education and Professional in Europe in Brussels on 28th February 2014.
The UEMS organised a meeting with representatives of European Scientific Societies in Brussels on Saturday 1st March 2014 with an aim to discuss how to foster synergies among the medical profession to shape the future of healthcare delivery in Europe and improve the quality of care provided to European citizens.
We only need to look at the figures and the expanding waist lines of Europe to see that obesity is increasing. Childhood obesity is a particularly worrying trend, which in turn can lead to a life time of health problems such as diabetes, heart disease and other major chronic diseases.
